Missouri River Brown Trout

April showers bring May browns

bent rod Missouri River

The snow is melting, the birds are singing, and the woods are coming alive with new growth. Spring is finally in the air and we are ready for it. This April/May has brought us a little bit of rain and a lot of uncertainty with Covid-19 shutting the world down around us, but spring is a lovely reminder of how beautiful change can be. The sunny days and warmer temps are precisely what we needed to get us out on the water, looking for trout.

FISHING REPORT

Bigfork, Flathead Valley, and Missouri River Fishing Report: As of now, we have a sweet little window here around the Flathead Valley with the Flathead River coming into shape and fishing great until the next big push of run-off. All tactics are working right now, including nymphing, dry dropper, and even some mid-sized dries for hungry rising trout.

Guides fly choices are your standard stonefly and San Jaun, we’re also producing fish on thin profile mayfly nymphs such as the Tungsten Jig Assassin.

On the Missouri River, nymphing has still been the name of the game. We have had success using the wireworm, San Juan worm trailed by a tailwater sow bug, S&M Hogan and Green Machine. Dry fly fishing has been looking up with Blue Wings, March Browns, and Caddis all making a presence. So have a dry fly rod rigged and ready for when you see that Missouri River target you have been looking for. Give us a call or shoot an email and we will get you out on the water. Cheers.
