So far it has been a chilly spring here in Montana with a couple sun-shiny days sprinkled in the mix. With temps hovering fairly close to freezing overnight, our big river (the Flathead) has started to drop just slightly. However, there is a LOT of volume moving and you should definitely have some experience on that type of water before heading out on your own float trip. It is that time of year when we must get a little creative to keep fishing. We have a few small local lakes we like dump the drift boat in to keep the lines wet. Balanced leeches, scuds, and San Juan worms. Find the shelf and adjust your bobber to keep you off the bottom. When the bobber dives down, SET THE HOOK!
THE MIGHTY MO
If you are up for a little drive, this is one of the best times to fish the Missouri River. At about 3 hours from Kalispell, you could make this a day trip. Although our favorite way is to load up all the camp gear and make it at least an overnighter! The fish are there, and they are hungry!! Nymphing early in the morning with a sow bug, pill popper, frenchy, San Juan worm, or your favorite may fly nymph. 9 to 10 feet with a split shot.
GUIDED LAKE FISHING TRIPS
We also book guided traditional spin fishing trips on Whitefish Lake and Flathead Lake. Enjoy a morning or afternoon on one of these gorgeous lakes jigging and trolling for Mackinaw. There are also Northern Pike and Whitefish in these bodies of water. This is a great option for this time of year with conditions rapidly changing on our local rivers. The heated cab can be a real game changer on some of these cold spring days.
Fishing season is here folks and don’t let this one get away from you! Make this your year to get out and do it. We are booking trips NOW so get ahold of us and we will set you up for a real memory makin experience!
